Well, this was a ton of fun! Take a wonderful Overshot pattern designed by Bertha Gray Hayes, tweak the float length a teeny weeny bit, add a layer of Log Cabin on top of the overshot threading and voila....you have Overshot that takes on an entirely new look.
These scarves were all woven on a cotton warp with a wool/silk blend (Zephyr) for both the tabby and the pattern wefts. They were woven with just 2 shuttles, a light and a dark. We use double picks around a floating selvedge for our pattern weft and the weaving is fun, fast and really easy.
Things we will learn:
- that all weaving can be a journey of discovery
- How to start with a traditional Overshot motif and make it look more contemporary
- how to overlay a colour and weave sequence
- how to consider the colour and weave overlay as important as the float patterning
- how to add solid bands to the design to create division of space
- how to weave with just 2 shuttles and achieve colour and weave plus texture
- how to approach the sampling starting with D/L options on one tradling and then other treadlings
- it creates a range of motifs which can be used in other pieces
- that both sides are different yet so beautiful
- i made my samplers into scarves and why not!
