Overshot was the first weave structure I fell in love with way back in 1979. Everyone was weaving overshot in the '70's. "Keep Me Warm One Night" a book by Dorothy K. Burnham and Harold B. Burnham was hot off the press, filled with wonderful drafts and inspiring history of early handweaving in eastern Canada. I wove my first coverlet in 1979!
Now, overshot has been having a resurgence. I see it all over social media. Weavers of all ages - young, in the middle and old, are interpreting the old patterns in new ways. Here we will take a look at the basics and more!
Things we will learn:
- the unit system for overshot
- How understanding twill shapes will help us identify those shapes in overshot
- Tromp at Writ, Rose Fashion, treading of opposites
- using contemporary graphics in the threading
- adding other Plain Weave elements to the overall design
