Summer & Winter for rugs

I have a question about Summer and Winter – why isn’t the tabby necessary if you use this structure to do rugs?   Wouldn’t the integrity of the cloth suffer (long floats??)

Summer & Winter never has a float longer than 3, no matter how many times you repeat the units, so you don’t need to worry about float length.  When you use Summer & Winter for a rug, you want it to be weft-faced so if you put in the Plain Weave it wouldn’t be able to pack down and cover the warp.  Without the Plain Weave, it just packs and packs and packs which is what you want for a rug.  It will be very thick because of that 3 thread float.
