hi Jane,
Can a 44 inch Louet Spring loom with 12 shafts realistically weave small area rep weave rugs? Please elaborate as to why or why not.

Hi Tricia. Check out the Helpline to see if you can find your answer there. I think the question and answer “What can I weave on my Spring Loom – Rugs, Blankets??” might answer your question.

Greetings, my second hand countermarch loom only has 2 sets of lamms, one at the top of the loom and one set below above the foot pedals. I can’t see a manufactures name on it. Can you direct me to where I can find more information about this type of set up? It has 4 harnesses. Cheers Sandra

Hi Sandra – from Sandra ;-). Could you move your question over to the Forum which will give you a chance to post some photos of your loom? That might help us identify your loom. Once we know what make it is, maybe we’ll be able to help you find more information about it. I’ll watch for your photos.

I just got my copy of the Green Book. I have a Mighty Wolf and thought I heard you say the book drafts are for tie up on a counter balance loom. Do I need to reverse the tie up for the MW?

Have you had a chance to see Jane’s little video “Reading a Weaving Draft“? Check out the Knowledge Base on the JST website under Information. At the bottom of the page, you will see that we recently added 2 videos. Jane explains tying up different styles of looms and how different well-known books write their drafts and what it all means.

Will you explain how to get tie-up correcty on a countermarche that doesn’t have parallel lams? I have found myself the owner of an 8-shaft countermarche floor loom with ten treadles and as i have only learnt on a table loom i’m a bit bamboozled…

Hi Emma,
I do believe that on all counter-marches, standard or parallel is that the upper lamms are your sinkers and the lower lamms are your rises. You have
to tie-up both with either style of counter-marche. Having said that, I do not have a standard counter-marche I have never tied one up. The one thing I am not certain about is the length of the cords. It is easy with the Louet’s because the long cords are all the same length and the short cords are all the same length. If this does not answer your question I would write to the manufacturer of your loom and get their input. Hope this helps,
Jane

I’ve been thinking about a new loom and trying to get a sense of scale of the different looms Jane uses— what width is this Spring? I have a 36” loom but have never sat down at anything over 40” and as a small person I’m not sure if the bigger width Spring would feel expansive or just overwhelming. Lots to think about!

How about some suggestions on where you can do some research? You can search in the JST Knowledge Base for questions about Louet Looms including – Spring Also, if you look in the JST shop – you can find all the dimensions and information about the Spring 90-8 (35”) loom and the Spring 110-8 (43.5”) loom by clicking on the links. Scroll down on the page and you’ll find more information. If you click on the Measurements and Weight of each loom, you will find out the amount of space the two different Spring looms will occupy. You can also check out the 12 shaft Spring as well, should you want to look into having more shafts on your Spring. One thing to consider is what you normally like to weave, are you wanting to weave wide fabric for sewing or blankets, etc.? We now know how to weave double width, so it’s amazing what you can actually weave on a narrower loom. I’m short and have been weaving on a 35″ loom for 10 years and can’t remember wishing for a wider loom. If you want to hear how other JST Online Guild members like their Spring Looms – post a question on The Forum, I’m sure you’ll get a lot of input!

I notice in this video that it appears the locking pin remains in 4 shafts (I assume the unused shafts). Is there a reason for that?

Likely the reason is that Jane could “show” us around the loom and then sit down and weave. You are able to do that on the Spring but not on all Louet look looms – you can’t on the David.

Hi Sandra! Thanks so much for answering. I did actually find out (after paying attention) that empty shafts on my Spring 90/12 slightly rest on the warp coming off the warp beam It doesn’t really become an issue until the warping rod comes up and over and gets near the heddles near the end of a warp. I usually weave with eight shafts, and those four unused shafts actually behave better if locked up and away from the warp. Just my 2 cents. Happy weaving!

So I bought the Spring loom from my friend after she had it for a little over a year as she wanted more so she got a Megado. She purchased it from you and but it all together herself. After rewatching this episode I looked at the open shed on the Spring loom and it seems not to open all the way to the top. I know this can be caused by different things but where do I start and is there a problem that is more common than others? Love the loom so far but I do have your mohair kit and I want the shed to be as large as I can get it. Thanks

Good morning! Congratulations on your new to you Spring loom! The Knowledge Base has a number of questions and answers for the Spring loom including the measurements. The first thing I would do would be to double check those measurements. Hopefully that will help getting a beautiful shed. Let us know!

Here’s another item from the Knowledge Base that answers your question. Shafts and lamms not level on my Spring

Hallo!
I am weaving till now with my Ashford Rigidheddle loom. At the Moment i am waiting for my louet Spring loom. I have seen the most Videos and in Theory it seems not so complicated… 🙃😉But there is one thing I do not understand:
If I want to weave with the Spring, the patterns from Anne Dixon with the Spring, is it right to tie up the empty squares? (Is Spring an Anker or a Ballon?)
Thank you?
Greetings from Germany!

How exciting, Claudia! You’ll love your Spring Loom and if you want to understand it a bit more – Jane has an article on the JST Knowledge Base describing how the different types of looms operate. If you understand your loom, you’ll understand better how your tie-ups work. For the record, most patterns developed in North American are written for a Jack Loom. Hope this helps!

What if you tie up the Spring at just the outermost treadles? The lamm would be pulled up/down near its end. Do the lamms remain horizontal? I expect they would be parallel, but perhaps the ends of the lamms would no longer be vertically even?
Just wondering about applying the force on one end of a lamm and whether there’s a possible issue at the other end.
