I have some cones of linen, which I assume to be tow linen but there are no labels. Is there some way of telling which are wet spun and which are dry spun?? The information on linen has been very interesting to me. Didn’t know that stuff!!!
Hi Jackie, the quick and easy thing to know is that 5/2 is size 5 yarn with 2 plys and 8/4 cotton has 4 plys. Jane gives a more detailed description on the Knowledge Base. She gives a detailed description there.
I have a new Ashford Jack loom and Jane says they are not the best looms for working with linen. How would cottolin work with a Jack loom? I would love to try some samples using cottolin.
In Season 3, Episode 2 Cramming & Denting, Jane weaves with linen and explains a bit more about Jack looms. As for the cottolin, you’ll be just fine weaving with it on your Ashford Loom so go ahead and put on a warp 🙂
I have a Jack loom too. Linen is fine to have as weft. Watch the draw in at the ends though. Remember linen has little flexibility so keep the edges from drawing in too much. You may need to beat a little heavier.
