There is a wonderful Walt Disney cartoon that talks about the Fibonacci sequence, Pythagoras, and more. It is on YouTube, called Donald in Mathmagic Land, all about “sacred geometry”. I remember watching it as a child, but most went right over my head. In fact, some of it still does. It is worth watching. I’d link it here, but it is half an hour long and someone may object.

I keep forgetting to comment about how much I am enjoying learning from you. Your method of teaching just clicks with me, and I’m gaining more and more confidence. I’m brand new to floor looms and design, so I’m learning tons of stuff. It helps that you’re a joy to listen to as well. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your videos!

Loved this segment on division of space. My brain is doing cartwheels with possibilities. Excited about finishing my present warp and designing something new with these details. Thanks you for your on line guild and clear directions. So glad I joined.

I love all these videos. I am currently viewing from the lesson in 2 about division of space but came back to review this one. I am soo very happy that I have joined the Guild this year.

Hello Jane and all,
I have very much enjoyed the online guild – especially during the time that my local guilds were not meeting in person!
I set myself a challenge to weave with colors on the opposite sides of the color wheel. Some of the towels were woven in a two block twill others in plain weave. It was a great exercise and fun to experiment with all sorts of colors!
Although I have been weaving for a while, the guild has inspired me to try some techniques that I’ve never used- thanks!

At last I understand how to use Fibonacci!! I got in a real tizzy before watching your video Jane. Huge thank you for simplifying it.

So happy to have this online guild, especially during these times. A question about dividing space horizontally while weaving – what is the best way to measure the lengths of the divisions? I use a tape measure pinned to the side of the cloth, but I worry about the tension stretching the cloth and causing the measurements to be off.
Any thoughts or other suggestions? Thanks very much, Candace

I wouldn’t worry about it – when you take the tension off your project, your horizontal segments will proportionally remain the same. Have fun weaving, Candace!

These lessons are great! They challenge me to try new designs and techniques. I do have a question about the brown and teal towel. The design ends up with an odd number of thread ends. If you are warping the loom back to front, how would you tie this off? The odd thread would be at the back of the loom. Thanks so much!

Hi Cindy,
When you end up with an odd amount of threads, or what I do is just tie it to the rod at the back of the loom. Now, if you don’t want to do that, and sometimes, I don’t want to 😉 I just make sure when I’m designing that I end up with even amount of threads.

I’m watching season 1 before warping my first weaving project. I am confused about the way to ‘tie up’. For example, about 8 min in she discusses the tie up for twill. What does that mean? Is there info I missed along the way and didn’t understand, or will more clear instruction be coming? Thanks so much. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire lesson.

The tie-ups for your loom are different depending on the weave structure of your project. You will learn more about tie-ups as you move forward through the episodes. The samples in Seasons 2 & 3 use Plain Weave as the basic weave structure and Jane moves into Twill in Season 4. As you move further into the weaving rabbit hole you’ll understand how your tie-up can add so many options to your cloth design. In the meantime, keep on watching the episodes and all will eventually become clear!

I have heard this is “the best episode” of season 1, but I have been unable to view any of it.
I have tried on my iPad, PC, MacBook, and iPhone.
I have tried the suggestions of viewing in and out of private mode, and clearing my cache, and all that.
It’s making me sad, and jealous of everyone who got to see it! #FOMO
Any ideas?

Oh, and to be clear, I have no difficulty viewing any of the other episodes.

Hi Alexander,
We’ve checked on a few things and you should now be able to view the episode. Let us know if you if you have any other problems viewing.
Cheers!

I understand the twill threading when you change direction, 1234, 321 so that the “4” is not repeated. But in order to keep the same number of ends in each third, why wouldn’t you have the next “space” end with 4321, 4.

I’m not sure I understand what you are asking, Clare. On one side of the divide you thread from right to left – 1234 ending on 4 and the next side begins with 321 and moves to 4321 until you finish threading your warp. You do change colours as you come to them in the warp, but the threading remains the same. You will learn all about Twills on 4 shafts when you get to Season 4.

I have been weaving for five years after learning from a wonderful teacher here in Boulder, Colorado. I joined this guild to get another perspective and to tap into the design sense that I was getting from FB posts related to the guild. Oh my, this episode is just what I wanted. It is so rare to have such a clear presentation of how to design. I’m a math person, but I especially appreciate getting such great and simple tools for dividing space. I’m looking forward to more!
