Loved the show and tell! A question for Jane – did you recommend weaving dish towel hems in canvas weave or plainweave? I’m planning some dish towels based on what you did with the colour and weave warp, and it appeared to me that you had hemmed in canvas weave patterning, possibly to avoid flaring? Thanks.

Very difficult to hear Jane during this segment.
Thanks, Jeannette

Hi Rebecca,
I did weave the hems of the towels done on the old shadow weave warp in plain weave…well, chubby tabby 🙂

Jeannette,
Are you able to increase your volume? I was just listening to this video actually and it sounded ok at my end.
Here’s where you can also adjust the volume right on the video player, I’ve circled it in red. Let us know if this helps 🙂

Oh my goodness, these classes continue to amaze me. I also watch online video classes with other experts in their particular weave structures, but something about the way Jane breaks everything down to the basics, it all makes sense so much more quickly. I love love love the laces now too and before the class, wasn’t anticipating the excitement with these weaves that I now have. I have some warps all ready for grandchildren blankets and have already revamped the threading for one to fit a canvass weave structure after seeing the beautiful examples in the latest show and tell. Thankyou so much for this online guild and I should also mention that the ability to go back to any season and refresh some older topics is so important too.

Holy moly! Never expected all this from canvas weave. Loved the color &/ weave effects! Can you tell us the setts for the tussah silk scarf & the blankets with Boucle and the one with 3/2 cotton? Thanks so much!

Absolutely loved the show and tell! So glad you showed many other fiber combinations that will work with the canvas structure. Looking forward to seeing your new patterns. Thanks so much!

Looking for info on how to finish this linen sample. I have never used linen before.

I just finished three canvas weave projects and I’m really liking this weave. I have done lace numerous times in the past but never even considered canvas weave as a lace. Oh my was I wrong.
First was a set of placemats inadvertently woven ala Huck – I should read my drafts closer but that’s ok, I like the way they turned out
Next I set up two scarves. Each uses different treadling sequences and I think they are turned out significantly different from each other.
Although it may be hard to see, the darker scarf has a very subtle pattern of “fat tabby” squares within the design. I used 8/2 bamboo for the first time and they have lovely drape.
Thanks for expanding my lace repertoire.

I am using the kit for this class. Warp is on the loom, threaded and sleyed 8 dent reed 2/ dent. The holes are so big and I’m not getting 16 EPI . What should I do?

Do you have too much tension on your warp?

Finished my sample and after washing am very pleased with the outcome. However, even after washing and pressing, the Venne Organic linen is still hard. Jane’s sample seems so much softer. What can I do to soften up the fabric?

I wove a scarf with only left part of sample. I used my stash. WARP: spun silk WEFT: alpaca50% linen25% lyocell25% . Although my stash was not attractive for me anymore, I found it might turns well .

I am beginning the Lavender Lace linen canvas weave scarf and I am wondering if the threading of the first right edge plain weave section has an omitted 4 on the second heddle. Shouldnt there be 22 alternating threadings of 1 and 4 as there is on the left plain weave section? Thanks!

You are right, Karen! Gremlins got into the original draft and removed that “4” to see if we were paying attention 😂 A corrected pattern has been sent out to everyone who bought Lavender Lace – I trust you have received yours. Happy weaving and please post a photo of your scarf.

This is such an exciting season! Absolutely loved the Canvas Weave lesson and this was also my first ALL Linen experience! LOVE LOVE LOVE it and looking forward to more lace classes…all sorts of projects using linen and lace are popping into my head 🙂 Yes, I know other fibers can be used with lace but linen seems to be wonderfully suited for this type of weave? Maybe it’s just me and my uncertainty with linen still 🙂
I do have a question about the blanket Jane showed (~18 mins into the vid) with Monte Cristo and 8/4. I threaded up a “wee sample” (using Jane’s vernacular 🙂 ) and admittedly, I am also sampling the structure in double wide weaving. The threading is correct (1221, 4334 or for double width 15262615, 48373748) and I have the MC threaded on the 2&6 and 3&7 shafts. But when I treadle the thin, thick, thick, thin repeat I don’t get that cross-hatch canvas look like Jane’s blanket in the video. Any suggestions? Thank you, Team JST! 🙂
I should add that my tie up is the same as the Rising Shed Lace Tie Up (pg 5) used in the sample and extended for doublewidth weaving =.

and, I think I got it…after I typed it all out I noticed some of my treadling sequence was out of order – EECK! thank you for the inspiring ideas and the building blocks of information to understand and eventually figure these things out 🙂

I will be making a baby blanket just waiting on the monte cristo. I have made blankets before using a combination of 4/8 and mallo cotton which I was guessing is similar in thickness to the montecristo, but I did those blankets with a sett of 12. The monte Christo must be thicker than mallo so will wait to see it then. Jane’s blanket in the show and tell is so beautiful, can’t wait to try it! I thought a navy with maybe a pale limette border with the MC for a baby boy.

I’ve been playing with huck & didn’t realize how fun the structure is to weave! Used 40/2 linen warp with 12g Bambu weft. Pretty drape but still slightly crisp. Only problem I found is that linen doesn’t seem to twist into a nice fringe. They loosened after washing even though I twisted very tightly. Any thoughts?

You’re right – linen doesn’t like to be confined in long, twisted fringes. Not all is lost though – Jane often just cuts them about 2″ long (I’m guessing) and lets them just “be” where they want to be. I’ve cropped a segment of a photo to show you what I mean from the new Lavender Lace Scarf Kit in the JST shop. Your Canvas Weave scarf is beautiful!

Thanks for the quick reply. The cut fringe looks neater and the scarf is so pretty!
