Slight confusion here. Page 7 shows how to set up all the treadles for rising shed. However, I have a sinking shed David.  If I understand this, I should use the sinking shed tie ups on page 6 instead of those indicated on page 7 for tying up all my treadles. Loom all dressed and ready to play.

I have a Loretta Spring. I keep getting confused about the tie up.

This is what I think I know;

If the draft is rising shed I tie the short cords to the numbers in the tie up, long cords to the blanks, and the reverse for a sinking shed.

Am I correct.

You do such a great job explaining, I really get confused sometimes!

Loved the Canvas Weave session today.  I’m getting geared up and ready to go!

I have two questions …

1.  On Page 5… Rising shed lace  Why is there a blank row prior to the final 11 repeats of Tabby in the weaving draft?

2. On page 6… In both the lace and weft floats diagrams the unit block go B and then A, but in the Warp Floats diagram the unit blocks are identified as A and then B.  Why are they not also identified as B and then A?

I’m still finding my way around, but I am having fun.  My questions may be obvious to the more experienced.

I’m looking at page 5 and ready to warp, however, the warp color sequence calls for 226 white threads and 2 grey threads. I don’t understand where the 2 grey warp threads are positioned. Are they the floating selvages? Clearly I’m having a senior moment, can you help?

The warp colour sequence is on page 5 as well, Virginia.  Near the bottom of the page on the left.

Between sample 10 and 11 there is a statement “Now I’m using the Huck Tieups”.  Where do I find those? I must be missing them when I look at the instructions.

Never  mind. I relistened to the video. She says “use the warp float tieup” for sample 11 in it. The “use the Huck Tieup”  in the instructions threw me and then I made this too hard.

I really like this canvas weaving and laces lessons.  I still need to clean the edges up but it came out pretty good, I think.I did use 8/2 cotton rather than linen for the other color and was disappointed in the little bit off shrinkage along the side in the area I used it without alternating linen.

 

The first time I dressed a fool with linen it was not a good experience as the knots kept getting so loose before I could manage to get from one end to the other. I figure others also have dealt with this and so I wanted to share my little way of taking care of the slipping. I used the clips to hold the ties in place as I moved across and it worked great.  I like the linen Jane sells better than some of the other brands as it seems to have a softer finish.  Thanks!

Just finished the Canvas sampler and trying to decide on a project to try the lesson on my own. While looking at the Huck tie up and treadling, took a look and if you add the “huck” center thread to each canvas unit – and use the Huck Tieup and Treadling – seems you get Swedish Lace.

I am having difficulty with the Huck sequences. I have a David  loom, and have worked out the tie up, but my Huck doesn’t look right. Which of the float treadles should I be using?  Is it the ones tied to shafts 1&2;3&4 or just 1, 4 or 123; 234?

I am having fun trying different colours in the LD sequences. I am confused however about the TD pick.  In a A , do I weave 13, 34, 13, 34 , 13 or is it 13, 34, 24, 34, 13?

I too am having the same problem on a David. I have tried both warp and weft tied treadles and it still doesn’t look right. Maybe we are missing something in the sequence of treadling?

I’ll try to answer all the questions above with one answer 🙂

If you have a David or other sinking shed 8 shaft loom….take the rising shed tie-up and just tie-up the white empty boxes.  That works for any draft.  This means that your treadling sequences will be the ones on page 7.  You are weaving on a sinking shed loom but you have it tied up to create the sheds you would get on a rising shed loom.  Therefore you use the rising shed treadling sequences.  You will notice that the tabby for each unit is the same tabby so if you are doing the Huck sequences, the centre tabby will be the same as the first and fifth pick.  Hope this helps,

Any tie-down pick will be the ‘other tabby’ that you throw at the end of the sequence so you can repeat it.

So as I weave the sampler some warp threads are becoming much looser than others. Is that because of the floats?

I am confused. So much information, but I’m going to jump in and try a sample.  I have a David and find the confusion between the rising shed and sinking shed tie ups.

I have to admit, I am utterly lost as to what a huck tie-up is. Am I correct in thinking it is just the “Canvas warp floats” and “Canvas weft floats” on the handout?  I have six treadles, so I have tied up two tabbies (1 & 3,  2& 4) and tied up each shaft separately.  For sample #11, for example, I think I should be treadling A: 13, 123,123,13 then B: 24, 234,234,234,, etc., but that is only a four-pick sequence.  Where am I going wrong? What is the fifth pick between the As and Bs? Or do I have the whole tie-up and treadling sequence wrong?

Jane switched to the Warp Float tie-up for sample 11 on page 6.  The best way for you to understand and visualize what is happening is to draw it down on the graph paper attached to the lesson.  Also – Jane’s episode on Huck releases tomorrow – so hopefully that will help you understand the different tie-ups more clearly.

Well, this is embarrassing.  I just realized, while I was staring at my draw-downs (I had already done them a few weeks ago), that I’ve been looking at canvas threading, not huck, and I needed to look at the huck threading on Page 2 to figure out the treadling.I notice that the samples switch from warp floats to weft floats, so I’ll stick to my skeleton tie-up and figure it out as I go.  Thanks for your patient reply.

One thing that would be helpful for me in this episode would be if you added time stamps to pages 9-10 of the handout noting where in the video Jane is showing and discussing each particular sample. That way, I could just go directly to any particular sample without looking through the whole video, for example when I am preparing to weave a particular sample or when I want to compare what I wove with what Jane wove and think more about what’s happening with the weave. (It looks like there are a couple of time stamps noted, but I would find it helpful to have this notation for each sample. I am adding them to the PDF now….)

I am officially stuck! I have a CB loom. Using the 4,2 PW treadle with the 2,1 float/lace treadle. The 3,1 PW treadle with the 4,3 float/lace treadle. I am not getting the same lace pattern as the sampler. I have triple checked the threading, sleying and the tie up but it is not working. I am using 8/2 cotton, 8 dent reed with 2/dent. Here is a photo of my results. Any suggestions where I have gone wrong? Thanks!

Still flummoxed. If my threading, tie up and treadling are all correct then that just leaves winding the warp. I wound this warp with 2 threads in my hand and started off by pairing with the floating selvedge. Meaning, that my floating selvedge and then the thread that would be threaded into shaft #1 are my first 2 threads. My next two threads start on shaft #4 then #1 and so on for the plain weave. Is it possible that this has somehow thrown off the pattern? I would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks.

I’m sorry I haven’t answered you, Jacqueline but my warp for the Canvas Sampler is waiting to go on the loom ;-). Have you tried playing with the draft on paper or in Fiberworks, to see if you can work it out there?  Jane is currently taking a well deserved break from the Studio, so I can’t run your problem by her.

Have you checked the Knowledge Base where Jane has great descriptions about different types of looms and the way to tie the different looms up?  Also, Ginette wondered whether you have looked on the other side of your cloth to see if what you are looking for is there.

Hi Jacqueline, which sample number are you working on, I’m thinking it’s #2 and the first one that Jane weaves on 5.2.5?

What is your treadling sequence, is it Tabby Float Float Tabby (1,4,4,1) and then switching to your other Tabby Float Float Tabby (2,3,3,2)?

Hi Ginette, yes it is sample #2 and my treadling sequence is exactly as you have laid out above. I even went back and checked it against the drawdown and it matches. I have decided to continue on and just see what happens. I don’t want to remove the 4 yrd warp and I don’t think I can get the lease sticks back in to rethread it to do something else as I warped it with 2 threads in my hand.

I do have a question though about warping. I have never warped the floating selvedge as a single thread on it’s own, and then tie on and warp the pattern threads. Should I be doing this or does it matter? Thanks for your help.

Warping with more than one thread in your hand would not cause it. As long as it was threaded as the pattern.

Hi. I will be warping and weaving this on my 8 shaft, 10 treadle, countermarch loom.  I have difficulty changing my tie-ups during a project because the woven cloth interferes with my ability to see the tie-up cords as well as makes it much more difficult to get my body and arms in a position to change the tie-ups.  Any suggestions?  I could always cut off the woven fabric and change the tie-ups  then, but thought there might be a way to take advantage of the additional treadles and shafts.  ( I have already started winding the 6 1/2 yard warp)

Good morning, Joan.  You are in treadle heaven with 10 available to use.  Tie up your treadles using the Mother-of-All tie-up on page 7.  Leave treadles 5 and 8 empty separating the warp and weft tie-ups from the PW and lace – that will give you a quick visual of where you are if you peek under the loom while you are weaving.  Don’t forget to mark each treadle where you can see it if you peek under your cloth while you are weaving.  You’ll be fine and you won’t have to cut your cloth off your loom until you are ready to.
