I am so glad to see that I am not the only one who loses their place though I am not usually as clever as Jane in figuring it out. 🙂

Such beautiful patterns! Can’t wait to weave this gamp!

Love this. Can you create a shadow weave starting with any draft?

Shadow Weave was designed to work with twill – what did you have in mind, Kathleen?

I’ve been looking at some of the advanced twill structures on Hand weaving.net and want to come up with something really intricate. I have bamboo and tencel I want to use in a scarf for myself and wanted a challenge both in design and weave. Anything I need to watch for other than loooong floats?

I just looked but couldn’t find anything on Shadow Weave on 4 shafts on Handweaving.net but lots of ideas for 8 or more. This season, Jane is focused on the possibilities available with 4 shaft Twills and there might be a time down the road when she moves to 8 shaft Twills. Handweaving.net has many lifetimes worth of intricate designs that you could weave for your scarf. Have fun exploring.

I’m struggling to get anything like the correct ppi on this. I would have to literally touch the beater to the cloth and the negative space is then huge. Also my 45 degree seems about right even though I have way too many pics. Jane seems To give quite a firm beat Any advice?

How is your tension on the warp? Sometimes that can make a difference.

Tension is same as I usually have for this yarn and set in plain weave. I have a spring loom so it’s easy to judge tension by placement of the front beam upright Would tightening or loosening help

Geraldine, I made an assumption and possibly it is not correct 😉 I assumed that you were using the pattern that came with the Shadow Weave episode along with the designated yarn and sett. If you were using a different yarn or if your sett were more open, you could/would have trouble getting the right ppi. What are you weaving, yarn, recommended sett, structure, etc.?

I’m using 2/8 cotton at 18 epi

I contacted Jane and sent her your question, before you had a chance to get back to us. Her response was as follows:
“Which Shadow weave is she talking about…the cotton one of the Zephyr one. The cotton is just a normal beat….the Zephyr is a delicate beat.”
So, what you are aiming for is balanced at 18 epi and 18 ppi which should be doable. Could you double check to make sure you have dented your reed correctly? Just double check the denting with the reed you are using against Jane’s Reed Substitution Chart. I’m just wondering if somehow your cloth is too open. Is your width in reed actually 16 ½ inches as called for in the pattern?

So excited to try this magical one! Snow season is weaving season for me, so it’s not too far off before I’ll begin it.

Thanks I have revisited my project after a break and realised I was just beating too hard. I also have a wool weft faced rug on another loom that I had been working on and I think I had become used to using a heavy beat. Now that I’m beating more gently I’m much closer to the correct ppi😊

Using 8/2 cotton, 1-2-1-2 sleying on a 12-dent reed. This is my first warp on my new Louet Jane after five years on a 48″ Macomber, so perhaps I am doing something wrong, but why is it that I can’t beat the green pick up next to the brown? I have re-wound the warp due to uneven tension and have tried both loosening and tightening the tension for weaving without any change in this spacing. Is the sett too tight?
The line breaks every two picks make it difficult to see any of the patterning happening in the shadow weave.

Try placing the brown with a little space between two greens, rather than right up next to it. I’d do a wee sample and cut it off and finish it. My guess is that “the magic is in the water”.

Thank you for your suggestion. Yes, the threads readjust during wet-finishing, but it doesn’t make a nice fabric…something about that extra space. The main problem I am having is that I can’t see the patterning well at the loom, so I can’t see errors easily or changes I want to make. I’ve held white paper underneath, but it is still hard to see the patterning. Is it the colors I chose? (I thought the lime green/dark brown would be sufficient contrast for this shadow weave, no?) I will try easing up on the warp tension again. In your own samples, does each pick slide right up to the one before? Why would mine not do this?

OK, Susan – digging deeper – have you double checked your threading? Are you using Jane’s mantra “throw, beat, change, beater back”? I always use the mantra on my table loom as well as my David. That gives you an opportunity to place your weft where you want it, prior to changing your shed. The colours you chose won’t make any difference as to how your weft beats in, as long as everything is 8/2 cotton sett at 18 epi, which seems to be what you have. Can you take a photo of the sample you finished? A close up photo up as well one of the whole sample so we can see whether your Shadow Weave is doing what it’s supposed to.

Here is photo of the straight twill sample after washing – dark throw first in the lower row, light throw first in the row above. The fabric is light and loose and, on the loom, it is very difficult to see the patterning in either row.
I did check my threading. I found one thread in the wrong place, but otherwise, it all seems correct. I did use Jane’s mantra on this sample, but it didn’t seem to help and I found it awkward to try to loosen up my beat with one pick and double-beat the next pick…just didn’t feel right, but I tried.
I feel like I’ve done something wrong here that I can’t get these threads to sit comfortably together in a way that I can see the pattern as I go – and the issue is smack under my nose, but I’ll be darned if I can figure out what’s off. When I got the Jane, I should have started with a straight plain weave and then a regular twill, I supposed, before tossing on the shadow weave. I’m tempted to set up the shadow weave on my Macomber and see if it weaves differently on that loom….

Hi Susan – I sent a message to Jane about your issue and this is her answer.
“Mine looked quite open when I wove it but everything shifted into place in the wash.
Her finished piece looks great”.

Did you wind the warp with two colours in your hand? I have a warping mill and have trouble at the turn. (cross). Any hints? I don’t want to have to tie off all the time!

This is my shadow weave version.
orange and golden 8/2 merc. Cotton in warp and green with deep purple in weft.
I just took the colours off the shelf and went with it. It looks really cool.
The extended point is my favourite! -

Hi! Just wondering, what would the opposites be for a shadow weave 8 shaft straight draw twill? Thanks!
