Jane, I have a lot of 8/2 Tercel, what do you recommend for a weft to make it soft “like butta”? Which of your silks or bamboos and what setts?
I’ve learned so very much for your online course! Thanks very much!

Hi Heidi, have you checked out Jane’s Master Sett Chart?  I think you will find your answers there 😉

I’ve done my gamp using the 4/8 cotton but had to miss out the diamonds as a frame section due to lack of space on the loom. But I got seduced by the silk scarf using the variation on the unit substitution. However, I found that setting 2/20 silk at 18 EPI did not produce anything resembling the scarf that Jane showed us even after washing. It was almost impossible to keep an even beat for 18ppi and the beautiful complex diamond pattern was completely lost. So I’m going to reset and try again. Disappointed, but learning a lot.

I’ve been reworking the silk scarf threaded on the unit substitution variation. I’ve discovered that this threading is actually called crackle weave and is a block weave! You learn something new every day! However, I’m just weaving it as a point twill. In the first photo the sett is 20EPI and this shows the pattern really well, but is quite a firm fabric. So, I’ve taken out some of the dark threads and changed the sett to 20EPI and in the third photo you can see the pattern. I’m hoping this will give me a nice drapey scarf. Fingers crossed that I’ve got enough warp left! I think I’m becoming a crackle geek!-

Looking great, Penny! Looking forward to seeing photos of the finished scarf 🙂

Finally got my scarves off the loom, twisted the fringes and washed them. Scarf Sett at 24EPI Is still fairly firm even after washing. Scarf sett at 20EPI is much softer and drapier but you can still see the diamond patterns. Now waiting for them to dry and give them a press. Changing the graffic has made a huge difference and even though I had trouble tensioning the new section of warp I added, it looks fine. Next time I’ll use brighter colours!

I wanted to make placemats with the large gamp. This shows rose treadling. My sample to keep was woven in star. Almost think animal print (tiger).

8/4 cotton is nigh on impossible to get here in the UK, so I switched to weaving these in wool.
The warp is some of my handspun at 13epi, and then I rummaged in my stash to find something similar to use as the weft and dyed it in this magenta shade to give strong contrast.
Now to identify which sample is which and put a label on them… they’ve been off the loom since just before Christmas, and I’m already forgetting exactly what I did!

Here in the UK you can get 8/4 cotton from Helen Brotherton at My fine weaving yarn. Airedale Yarns also sell what they call soft 4 ply cotton yarn which is very similar and comes in a wide range of colours. Love your wool samples!

Good to know that Helen has some now, last time I looked she hadn’t, though it is mercerised. Weft Blown also stock some un-mercerised as well, but it’s in a really limited colour palette, and as you can probably tell… I’m not afraid of a bit of colour!
Airedale I won’t give my money to, the way they wound up Texere yarns and rebranded was disgraceful, and several friends ended up being out quite large sums of money from their closing down sale when they didn’t get their orders.

Hello
I finished this lesson some time ago and decided to do a project to practice what I learned. I also decided to put on a long warp, 11 yards. It was the longest warp I had ever done. For that reason, and a few others reasons, I have just finished my project now. I used 4/8 cotton to weave some baby blankets, and I based my design on the lesson gamp. I am pretty pleased with the results. Thanks Jane for being an awesome teacher!
