Brilliant as always, my mind is buzzing as to how I can use up my bits and pieces of stash once I’ve woven the sample . Jane you are so easy to listen to and watch.

Hello, Great to find the new episode but is there any reason why I’m being asked to sign in to Vimeo to watch it? .

Hi Sue, you probably have to do a hard refresh and it should fix it. You can do it on this site https://howtohardrefresh.com/
You could also try viewing the episode in a different browser like Firefox, that often works for me.
Let us know if it clears up.

Hey Jane:
Great session. Rich Material.
You are actually talking thru multiple modes of prototyping. Big cardboard, tea towel sampler, bamboo scarf of favorite section in sampler…

I need a little advice here as I have only one cone of lemon. I’m not sure how to proceed with preparing the first and third warp sections as I don’t have TWO ends of lemon. Should I:
a. roll half or so of this one cone onto something else in order to have access to two ends of lemon?
b. Hold only 3 ends at a time, but then I’d need to re-calculate the 108 ends somehowOr maybe you have some other simple idea…. I hope so. Please advise!

Hi Judy, the only way I can see to have 4 strands in your hand is if you wind some of the lemon onto another cone or spool or pick up another Lemon. Or do you have any other yellow at home that you may have 2 of the same that you could substitute the lemon with?

It’s me again. I solved the problem by loading a large bobbin with part of the lemon cone so I had, essentially, two yellow sources. It worked like a charm. I love the way weaving challenges my brain. And so does Jane’s course!

Glad it worked out! Much faster to warp with more than one thread in your hand.

Question on the wet finishing of the final scarf woven with the Bambu weft. After I wove the towels from the stripe sequence I wove 3 of the scarves with the indigo and aruba. How do you suggest I wet finish the scarves..does the bambu wet finish like the 8/2 cotton…hot water? Also, would you twist the fringe BEFORE I wash or AFTER?
Thanks so much !! (I love the guild!!)

Hi Barbara,
Jane suggests to wash them like she demonstrates with the silks in Episode 10 of Season 1 and I would do the fringes before washing for sure.

Is there a total number or range of warp threads that weavers use to get a standard size tea towel using 8/2 cotton at 18epi and ppi? Also how many inches of weft? Thank you.
-
August 4, 2018 at 12:15 pm #156450
Hi Mary,
Tea towels vary in width & length and it all depends on what the weaver likes as a standard size. A 24″ wide in the reed will give you about 20″ wide finished. Have you had the chance to look at the PDF in season 1, episode 5 ‘Project Planning 101’ where you can do calculations with shrinkage and draw-in and this could help you determine how many threads you’ll need. You can also find the file on the PDF page.

What is the weft for the teal towel at about 12 minutes? I mean, obviously the bright stripes are done as solid weft for that part, but does the rest of the weft alternate between the three warp colors that are warped with three ends held together?
-
September 14, 2018 at 7:22 am #156452
It looks to me that she is weaving with one solid colour in her weft, not alternating colours. The stripes in the warp are standing out, which makes them shine.
-
September 14, 2018 at 7:44 am #156453
Yes, I think you’re right. Maybe the middle tone of the three ends? It doesn’t look like a different color all together, but it is hard to tell.

Hi Jane,
Could you tell me what weft colors you used for the striping sequence at the 36 minute mark please? It’s my favorite!
Thank you,

I’m stuck for some reason. If the outside threads are 108 then that is 27 groups of 4. threaded 1,2,3,4 but the middle is 114 threads- it can’t be threaded 1,2,3,4 and come out even. my full warp end on will not end in a group of four, what am I missing. I’ve been struggling and counting and recounting all day.
114 divided by 4 (1,2,3,4) is 28 with a remainder of 2…
does any of this make sense ?-

Hi fudsy1, I explained it on the forum thread you asked as well 🙂

Yes it does! Thank you so much. I though it should but my OCD -matchy,matchy. Was getting the better of me. Did I miss this explanation in season 1 ? Just for future reference

Where can we find a demo of cutting warp threads and replacing?

Perfect opportunity for you to test the beta Online Guild Index, Emma. Under the Indexes you will see the Beta version. Click that and enter the word “zinger” or “taking out your warp”, click on “view” and you will be taken to the spot in the video where Jane demonstrates that trick!

Apparently it is in “introduction to sample one.” Feedback: I needed to use exact wording. Eg if I typed “taking out warp” nothing came up, only “taking out your warp.” So it took a few minutes. Also I found that the box I was typing into was very very slow. Not sure if that was just on my end but this box I’m typing into is fine. As in letters I was typing were not showing up for a while.

I made a number of mistakes while winding the warp. Actually, I make lots of mistakes. And on all the samples so far but it’s learning.
I posted that a question about my over -counting earlier today. I’m still pondering a solution.
I did have a question while winding this up. Odd numbers. I have knots at the lease end and I have knots at the breast beam end. If you end up with an odd number at the lease end and it is the literally the last group of threads, how do you tie it on and still have room for your lease stick?
I am not sure if this was even suppose to happen but I did it!!
I hope this makes sense. If I ever make it out of Season 2, it will be a miracle:)

Hi nc345,
Are your last group of threads that you mention tied at the cross end of the warp? If they are, they will be fine when you put your lease sticks in. I saw that you posted your other question regarding those extra ends in your warp. If you want this sample to be symmetrical, you’ll need to take out that odd number thread out and wind it up with your extra ends like Mary suggested on the other post. This sample is one of my favourites, I just love these colours.

Hi Ginette,
Yes, there is Limette thread that I tied to the peg on the cross end. It had a loop where I secured it.
I ended up just tying it to the back apron bar.
Next time, should I have tied off the multiple threads of 4 at the other end and begun the next section so it ends at the threading end?
-
April 11, 2020 at 11:04 am #161959
When you tie on new threads, they can be tied to the previous threads which ever end you end up on, you tie them to each other so 4 threads, if you end up at the cross, tie the new thread(s) with these 4 and continue on. Actually, Jane shows this better than I can explain! Here’s where she does it at the 3:25 mark on this lesson https://janestaffordtextiles.com/lesson/multiple-ends-in-your-warp/
She warped with 4 threads in her hand and attaches 2 threads to the 4 ends this is at the other end but you can absolutely do this at the cross end as well, this will avoid tying on thread to a peg.

How much of the 12 guage bambu is needed for the final scarf. I would like to do it in the same colors: aruba and indigo. Thank you!

Hi Diane – time to review Season 1: Episode 5 – Project Planning 101 to figure that out 😏 (quick tip – width in reed x ppi x length of scarf)

Delicious!! I have wondered about using several colors very close in value but thought it was too weird. But it’s gorgeous!
thanks

Is 12 gauge bamboo close to 16/2 bamboo?

Check out the yards per lb. on each of them, and that will give you an idea, Gail.
