I love this Jane ! Can’t wait for my kit to arrive next week. I think I might need some silk 🙂 Which size silk did you use in your scarf? I am learning so much here. Thank you for this format, it’s wonderful . Ellen

I’m loving this guild– thinking about colour and design as Jane presents it is a thrill. I just ran across this, and thought I’d share it:

Enjoy, fellow weavers!

As a new weaver, I really love this whole guild and all of the lessons. I have to say that this is one of my favorite lessons, I might just jump out of my box with this one. Jane, you are a joy to watch, so light hearted and fun. Please keep them coming.

Did you use Tussah or Bombyx silk? Can you tell me what the difference is?
Have been so inspired by this series on color! I love it.

Hi Beverly, Jane used the Bombyx 2/20 silk. Have you checked out the lesson in Season 1, Episode 7.4 – Silks? Jane talks about various types of silks and their differences.

Thanks, Ginette. Very helpful. I reviewed the lesson on silk and it answered all my questions. Will the colors that are currently out of stock be available anytime soon?

I’d love for my warp to be in the neighborhood of 20 inches wide. How would I expand the draft and keep the proportions?
-
July 6, 2018 at 11:53 am #156494
Hi Elizabeth, I’m going to chime in and give it a try, bare with me!
For 20 inches wide (20 x 18 EPI) you need 360 threads. Draft has 329 threads. 31 threads need to be added to the draft so let’s round it to 32 for an even number for a total threads count of 361.
I’m adding those extra 32 threads to the 4 main blocks and not the stripes. The stripes can stay the same.
32 threads to the main 4 blocks (54,88,88,54). Simplest way is to divide 32 by 4 & adding 8 threads to each of the 54,88,88,54 which gives you 62, 96, 96, 62. It will maintain the proportions as we’re adding the same amount of threads to each of the 4 blocks.
Total thread count 361, 20.05″ wide in the reed.
Hope this makes sense 🙂

Can yo provide the standard measurements for a tea towel, napkin and kitchen towel ? I would like to make my samples as practical as possible. Thanks

Hi rlb353,
In Season 1 Episode 5 PDF ‘Project Planning 101’ you’ll find at the end of the document a Table of Standard Sizes for towels, dinning room, clothing etc. Here’s a quick link to the PDF Page https://janestaffordtextiles.com/online-guild-episodes/pdfs/

I like my towels 28” x 18 finished measurements. If some samples are smaller I use them for bread baskets, drying mat on my counter, a small cover for toilet tank etc.

My son likes large tea towels so I added another Olive between the 2 Reds with the borders and it turned out great. I think I’ll try it is silk or tencel as you have it originally for a scarf in the fall.

Hi I understand that since Jane was weaving samples, she just carried the unused weft threads up the side. If one was to weave this pattern and wanted clean selvages, would it be better to go over the bump and dip the dip, or just cut the threads and restart as needed. (I’m referencing, the sample that appears to have 20ish weft repeats alternating with a narrower stripe sequence.)

Anytime there are more than a couple of picks in a section of weaving – I automatically cut the weft and tuck it back into the warp in the same shed. You can do your jumping and diving with a large block of one colour alternating with a couple of picks of a different colour. However, I personally would cut the weft of a smaller block of colour if I was carrying it over a larger block of a different colour. That would show up in your selvedges. Hope this helps.

Dumb question… How much silk? Shopping list mentions 4 colors Jane used. Do we need all 4, how much to buy? I skein each or more?
-
November 11, 2019 at 1:32 pm #156507
Hi Julie, if you wanted to use all 4 colours Jane used in this episode, you’ll need one of each.

I would not have guessed that some of these colors could intersect and be pleasing to the eye! It made me wonder if it is the deep saturation of color that allows such a mix to play so well together. I tried to imagine inserting pastels or neutrals and wondered if the contrast of saturation with the warp would work well or not. Naturally, I will test it out to see, but mostly I am endlessly curious about whether I will ever be able to anticipate how colors will look when interwoven. And this is just plain weave!! So many miles to go before I sleep….

Hi there,
I tried opening up the sett on Parrot and had a heck of a time with my tension afterwards. I’d like to try doing it again with this warp. Any tips on cutting off and maintaining the right tension?
thanks!

Just tie off sections in front of the reed with a slip knot, as you cut. If your tension is good throughout the warp, and you use Jane’s method of getting even tension on the loom as you tie-on to the cloth rod at the front – you should be fine, Carrie.
