Brilliant as always. Do not see the PDF posted for this warp. Got my kit and have the yarn and the paper seems missing.
Thanks.-

James, can you see it attached to the second episode of Parrot – Parrot at the Loom? Look over on the left side and it should be at the top of the menu. Let me know if you still can’t find it.

I am excited to weave a shawl using the clasped weaving technique, with the cotton and silk. I ordered the color sample cards, but am finding it difficult to match the silk with the cotton.
What color cotton matches the Adobe, Birch and Salt Spring sky? Also, would love to have a navy….

Hi Ellen, yes, Jane used the 2/30 silk

I was late getting started on this years episodes but I have watched all 5 at least once and some many times. I don’t know if I have missed this but when you tlak about “opening up the warp” and going from18 EPI’s to 12 EPI”s have I missed how that is done? Do you cut off what you have woven and re-sley the heddles and the reed and then retie the warp. Or do you do a whole new warp
-
May 14, 2018 at 8:46 pm #156548
Hi Barbara – It’s easier than that! Move your woven piece up to your cloth beam, and cut it off leaving yourself plenty to use to redent the reed. You don’t have to touch your heddles except maybe open them up a bit wider to make it easier to redent. Redent, tie on and away you go! Have fun. There are so many possibilities that Jane is showing us of how to “play” with the warp we already have on the loom for our samples.

Hi Mary Ann, can you go to the lesson ‘Parrot at the Loom’? On that episode you’ll find the pdf. Also, we added them all to one page for easy find. From the Episodes Page, at the top you can click on PDFs for all lessons and that will take you to the list

Hi,
I wanted to make a scarf at the end of my warp for this project. I purchased 20/2 Tussah Silk. Could I use that? If so should I open up the sett? Thanks Chris-
June 16, 2018 at 10:28 am #156552
Hi Christine,
Absolutely you can use the 20/2 Tussah Silk. Jane talks about the one piece where she did the clasp weft technique, she opened the sett at 16 epi and used 20/2 Bombyx silk. The piece is just beautiful and so drappy! You can use either silks for sure at that sett.

When you are doing the two and two stripes, are you just carrying the colors and not breaking the yarn every two picks?
-
June 25, 2018 at 7:26 pm #156554
Hi Rose,
When Jane is doing 2-2 repetitive sequence, she carried the colours up the selvedge and didn’t break the yarn each time. The scalloping ends up being part of the pattern which can make quite an interesting design!

I am just starting Parrot and I couldn’t find what size reed Jane used and how many threads per dent she used? Thanks Carol
-
August 10, 2018 at 9:26 am #156556
Hi Carol,
If you have a #12, sley at 1,2 per dent. If you don’t have a #12, you can match the sizes you have to the Reed Substitution Chart, most will do 18 epi or close to it 🙂

I love these colors and want to make napkins using them. I have 2/8 cotton. Would this work well for napkins or should I use a finer yarn?

June 28, 2019 at 1:55 pm #156558
This is probably a total stupid question, but i am truly clueless….how do you wind on an uneven (5 and 3 in this case) amount of warp ends without having a loose warp string at the cross end or one tied on to this end? I have been told to never tie on at that end as it has to be a continuous loop to go on the warping rod. There must be an elegant solution to this but i cant even dream one up…thanks.
-
June 29, 2019 at 7:50 am #156559
Hi Jacquelyn,
You would cut the 5 threads and attach the 3 for the next sequence together and just continue on, this way you won’t have to make a loop as they will be tied together. In Season 1, Episode 1.3 Jane shows how to warp with multiple threads and ties the new threads this way. You would do this either at the top or bottom ends of the warp which ever end you end up needing to add the new colours.-
June 29, 2019 at 10:32 am #156560
Ginette, i need to understand the first group of five wound on…..how? If i put 5 together and go up to the cross end and bring those 5 down i have 10, if i do one at a time or two at a time i am still stranded up at the cross end. And after that, for the rest of the zingers, if i tie three on i am again “stranded” at the cross end of the warp because i only need three and three wound up to the cross end is 3 and if i go down again i have 6….i really dont know what to do with odd numbers of threads, does this make sense?
-
June 29, 2019 at 10:34 am #156561
Did you mean to go ahead and tie on at the cross end? That has been the biggest thing i have been taught not to do!
-
June 29, 2019 at 11:48 am #156562
Hi Jacquelyn,
I miss understood your first part (I thought you meant winding with 5 threads then going to 3), but it’s still kind of the same answer 😉 Yes, if your end ends at the cross where you need to add your new end (colour), simply tie the two together (not as a loop on the peg, but just the 2 threads together) Aim for your knot to be as close to the peg as possible and just keeping winding. On the 1.3 episode, at the 3:29 mark, Jane cuts the ends she was winding and ties the new ones to it. Do the same thing even if your change in colour happens at the top of the cross. It’ll be fine, there won’t be any tension issues.

Hi – I now have parakeet on the loom – Yes, parakeet, not parrot. apparently, my math skills and memory leave a lot to be desired. After careful calculations, I somehow managed to wind a 244 thread warp and not the 340ish one I attempted to wind. oh well ! As I have a small loom, this gives me more space to expand when I open the warp up later -a fortunate mistake?
I wound this on to the loom using books and a 5lb weight to keep the threads taunt and fell in love with Jane’s method for winding solo.
I really enjoy these mini workshops and have learned a great deal. I especially like the newer format with Jane at the loom and the table in the same lesson.-

Have fun with your parakeet 😉 They are always a playful bird to have around and a friend of mine always says “a mistake is an opportunity waiting to happen”!

On the kit for this project I also purchased the silk suggested – 20/2 Bombyx Silk in Ariel’s Voice. I did this before reviewing the videos. Now I see for the difference scarves Jane is using more than just Ariel’s Voice in color as well as different size silk for the clasped weft – 30/2 silk . Now I wished I had reviewed the videos first before buying the kits! I know I can make up my own thing BUT I only have the one silk skein in the one color at home for this project.
Unfortunately I don’t have much of a stash of yarns, only from Jane’s classes so far.
Is this a common practice with the videos so that it is best to watch all the videos for each section before purchasing the kits so that you can decide the optional fiber you may want?
I know I can order more, but I like to be more efficient as I plan ahead. Sorry, just a little frustrated with my lack of stash and yarns to choose from.-
November 13, 2019 at 11:27 pm #156568
That’s too bad! I know we tend to get impatient and want to get weaving, but Jane just thinks on her feet as she try’s her “what if’s” . Do you have any 16/2 cotton or anything in your stash that is that fine? I can vouch for the fact that, before you know it, your stash will start to expand and you’ll find that you do start having yarn on hand to “play” with.

November 14, 2019 at 11:45 am #156569
Thanks, I am wondering for the kit for this project why she only recommends Ariel’s Voice as I am not sure which scarf she is referring to that is only using Ariel’s Voice. Maybe I am wrong but the scarves are all using several colors and yarn thickness. No I don’t have any thinner cotton or silk.

Just wondering what colour you chose as the dominant colour in your warp? Was it Parrot or Apricot? Knowing that might help us come up with a design suggestion for your unique situation.

Great, you have lots of Ariel’s Voice to make a stunning scarf/shawl. The reason I asked is that I had Sweet Potato Pie in my stash and used it for the Apricot predominant warp sample scarf. You could use some narrow 8/2 cotton repetitive striping on each end to add interest on the ends of your scarf. I’ll bet it will be stunning!

I really liked warping with multiple threads in the last sample. is there any reason not do do multiple threads for this one?

If you have enough cones of yarn of your individual colours, go for it, Lela!

With the second to last scarf that is 2/20 Ariel’s voice silk with 2/30 black and Ariel’s voice clasped weft How long did she weave that including fringe? I just love the length that it hung on her.

Hi,
I love the colors in this lesson!
I know Jane says she wants us to choose our own length for our samples, but I would really appreciate knowing how she would approach choosing a length for towels when the finished dimension is 17″-ish (using 8/2 cotton warp and weft and 18 epi). Also, what length does she makes her towels and placements once she has opened up her sett?
Finally, I’d like to know the dimensions of the beautiful scarf she made using clasped weave.
Eventually I will choose my own dimensions but right now I would really like to approach it “like Jane.”
Thank you!
Carol

Hi Carol, included in the Project Planning 101 is a list of sizes for household items. I’ve never heard anyone complain that their towels were too big ;-). Jane usually plans a warp long enough for our samples and then adds about 3 yards for a scarf, or ……. Three yards gives you lots of warp for a beautiful long shawl/scarf with a graceful fringe at either end.

Sandra, thanks very much! I’ve just wondered whether to follow the Golden rectangle formula for towels, which would mean that the length is limited by how wide the warp is – but I don’t want to constrain myself unecessarily! Atwater’s sizes don’t seem wedded to this though (thanks for reminding me about the Project Planning 101 pdf file). It sounds like Jane doesn’t strictly follow this formula either, for towels or for shawls/scarves.

Jane shows a sample opened up to 12 dpi woven with Zephyr. Since I have some zephyr in my stash I decided to try that. However this seems to be a very loose weave and just laving my shuttle down on it or advancing the warp tends to cause he weft to move around. Will fulling correct this? Or was this perhaps woven at 14 epi?
-
November 20, 2020 at 9:32 am #184120
It was woven at 12 epi and 12 ppi, Judi and it will full beautifully when you have finished weaving it!

I’d like to try the silk or a tencel weft cause I have some in my stash – but I have 2/8 and have no idea what would be a good place to start for sett – I didn’t note 2/8 weft mentioned here. I only have so much weft to work with so don’t want to waste…any thoughts on sett? thanks so much

For the next to last scarf – clasped weft using Ariel’s Voice:
1). Is Black 2/20 Silk used for the warp AND skinny weft line that is clasped? (the weft line looks reddish – not black)
2.). How long, and how many skeins of Ariel’s Voice was used for Jane’s beautiful scarf.? It looks to be about 2 yards in length and is gorgeous. I only ordered one skein, and should have inquired.
