Where do I find the PDF on Architecture?
-
January 18, 2018 at 11:46 am #157053
Hi Maureen,
When you are viewing an episode that has a pdf you can find them in the upper left hand corner of the screen right under the J in JST.
There are 2 icons ups there. One is an eye and that tells you what lessons you have looked at in the episode and the one underneath it looks like a
sheet of paper. Click on that and the pdf will open. -

The file seems to be attached to the intro, lesson 2.1.1. If you click on that lesson you should find the eye & the page side by side on the upper-ish left. Mine float & scroll down with the page, so they’re easy to spot.

I’ve downloaded the file, but it’s only 3 pages long, and you mention pages well beyond that. Should I be going back to a handout from last year? The 3 pages are purely about plain weave, not twill or other structures.
-
February 27, 2018 at 8:38 am #157072
Hi Jessica, for this episode, there are only 3 pages. As the episodes air, more pages will be released to correspond with those episodes. Season 2, we focus on plain weave.

How nice to start another year weaving with you Jane. These episodes were really great and I can hardly wait until the next one to start weaving samples and playing with sett. My weaving has improved quite a bit over the last year. Thanks so much for providing this workshop and allowing me to work at home at my own speed.

Great start to 2018, Jane! Can’t wait to get started weaving. With that in mind, is there any way you could let us know what materials we’ll need for the first few projects? It would be nice to have time to gather yarns from my stash, my LYS or order from you and if I knew what was needed for several projects it would cut down on my shipping costs.

Hi Brenda,
Sample #1 uses 1 cone each of Black, Red, White, Light Grey and Dark Grey
Sample #2 uses 3 cones of Natural, 3 cones of Navy, 1 cone of Apricot.
If you want to use similar colours, like black and white and another divider that is totally fine.

Jane I’m so excited to begin. I have a question about sample 1. May I mix bambu and cottolin with the cotton? it seems I have cotton in the black and white, bomb in the red and the two tones of grey in cottolin. I very well may purchase a kit, depending upon the prices and the shipping of the first two kits together, but if its not feasible for me, I’d like to try to use my stash.
-
January 22, 2018 at 10:20 pm #157061
Hi Deborah, I’ve used 2/8 cotton & cottolin and they work great together. I’ve also wove a scarf a while back using 2/8 cotton as warp & bambu 12g as the weft. Hope that helps!

Hi Jane,
What fun!
I made one of your placemat kits and LOVE IT!
I would like to make coordinating napkins. I’m thinking about using 8-2 cotton in the warp and boucle in the weft. You suggested a 12 – 12 set. Does that sound correct to you?
Thank so much,
Stefani-

Hi Stefani, You got it, 12 -12 for an 8/2 cotton warp & boucle weft for plain weave. If you wanted to do a twill with it, 16 epi/ppi works really well too.

Hi
Exciting to get started on a new season!
You mention texsolve heddles…
I have a Leclerc Artisat with wire heddles, some of which are a little bent and twisted. Can I replace them with texsolve heddles?
Thanks!-
January 24, 2018 at 6:42 pm #157065
Hi Kathy – here’s a link to Jane’s answer to that question from the Online Guild Forum – https://janestaffordtextiles.com/forums/topic/texsolv-heddles-on-fanny-loom/
-
January 24, 2018 at 6:45 pm #157066
Hi Kathy, You can replace them with texsolv heddles but just to mention, Jane wove a sample on her Fanny loom with metal heddles, a 3 yard sample where the initial warp was 8″ wide then she opened it up to 24″ wide without a problem and no broken threads.

Hello Jane,
After watching your very interesting video on widening the warp I’m wondering if I could use that technique for making a looser weave to match a firmer placemat design on the same warp? Hope that makes sense?
Thanks
Debbie from Devon UK.-
February 2, 2018 at 11:59 am #157070
Hi Debbie, great question! Jane actually wove a repp sample then opened it up to create a fabulous fabric on the same warp! You can definitely try it. There’s a photo of it on JST facebook page, posted on January 15. Here’s the link: https://www.facebook.com/janestaffordtextiles/

I am a little behind in the lessons but I have a question about the chenille throw Jane made in this lesson. I have found the discussion about sett extremely helpful and I understand it. But what I did not get from the video was – how did Jane decide to do the chenille at 15epi? I understand how she decided to use the very small silk as the weft. But how am I supposed to figure out how many Epi to do with the warp? I looked at the master sett chart and I see chenille at anything from 10 – 15 epi.
-
July 30, 2019 at 11:35 pm #157074
Hi njwhenry,
On the Master Sett Chart, the chenille is the Silk City Chenille and woven as warp & weft sett at 10 EPI and 11 PPI. For the warp predominant using the chenille & the bambu, the sett for these 2 yarns is 15 epi/ppi. On the Knowledge Base, Jane explains weaving with chenille at 10 epi / 11 ppi that you’ll find handy. If you have some chenille that you want to use as warp & a finer yarn as weft, I would wrap a ruler like Jane shows at the 23:00 mark and see what you get and try weaving a small sample.
Here’s the link on the Knowledge Base:
Hope this helps!-

Why did she (Jennifer) choose a 15 dents per inch?
-
February 14, 2020 at 7:29 pm #157077
What did it start at?
-
February 15, 2020 at 9:04 am #157079
Hi Holly, which sample?
-
-
February 15, 2020 at 9:03 am #157078
Hi Holly, she choose it so it could give it maximum drape and to also keep the overshot design squared as it’s difficult to get 20 pattern picks and 20 tabby picks in an inch. I would assume that Jennifer did some sampling prior to weaving her final blanket pieces to make her final decision on the best sett.

Hi Jane, I loved your lessons on sett. So informative and makes so much sense. I am weaving on a Wolf Pup so the width of the loom is limited. How do I rework the drafts to fit my loomso that I can open them up but with a maximum of 19 inches? I am so excited to try and have purchased the kit for Asymmetry.
Thanks, Faith

Hi Jane,
After having been a guild member for the last couple of years I’ve decided to go back and start from the beginning episodes and samples. I just finished watching this episode and I’m not sure why you used chenille set at 15 epi for the warp and silk 30/2 at 15 epi for the weft. Is that to achieve a balanced weave?
Thanks,
Diane

The discussion on sett is always interesting. I am weaving a hand painted scarf of 2/8 tencel sett at 30 and the weft is also 2/8 probably at less than 30 after I started less hard to get some more drape in the cloth. I am almost done.

Where do I find the PDF on architecture? I’ve reviewed all the pdf’s and believe that something is missing because Jane talks about a page 7 and the page 7 that I’ve downloaded is about ‘Analagous colour harmonies’ not Architecture. Also the page numbering jumps from page 8 to page 14. Thanks!
-
September 29, 2020 at 10:51 pm #179907
The information on Architecture is on pages 2 & 3 of the first handout of this episode.
One place you can find more information is in Jane’s Colour and Design articles, including one on Architecture, on the Knowledge Base under the Colour and Design heading. You’ll also find her “Designing for Weavers Blog Posts” there as well.
Hope this helps.

Hi Sylvie, there were pages attached to the first 3 episodes of Season 2 that put together give you 8 pages in total. One way to find them quickly is to go to the PDF list that can be accessed under “Learn” on the drop down menu and look for a All Lesson PDFs list. Under Season 2 you’ll find the pages you are looking for under the first 3 episodes of Season 2 – Colour and Design. You’ll also find a couple of inspiring downloads under Episode 11 of Season 2. Trust this is what you are looking for. Maybe you haven’t moved through Season 2 yet and haven’t found the episode downloads 😉

I can’t locate the PDF for Season 2, Episode 1. I saw in an earlier comment someone mentioned they were attached to lesson 2.1.1, but that lesson is no longer available. Can you point me to where the PDF is located? Thanks.

This episode answered so many questions I’ve had but didn’t know how to ask. Thank you! Now another question. I have only one reed with the mighty wolf I inherited. It’s 6 epi. The reeds are so expensive. I want to invest wisely. What size should I buy so that I can best follow along with the classes?
-
February 17, 2021 at 8:31 am #197393
Hi Virginia – I’d get a 10 dent reed. Your 6 dent will give you the setts that you would use on a 12 dent.

This has been a wonderful year of weaving for me. I’ve watched all the Season 2 videos but have just started weaving the samples this week. You and your team have single handedly (is that a word) saved me from lockdown ennui. I can’t tell you how motivating your videos and all the tips have been.
I’m just starting this journey and you’ve just started the year of lace and huck weave. I’m not ready for the advanced stuff yet, but will be watching and planning with you all.
Thanks for this marvelous winter with Jane and the JST team…
Susanne
