I felt like I was getting private help from a dear friend! Thank you. I saw some of the mistakes I have been makings. Now it should become easier and easier! Practice does make, well, I won’t say perfect, I’m trying to get rid of my perfectionism so I can accomplish much more at “well done”! Thanks again, you are so lovely to watch, peaceful and comforting. Touche’, Jane!

You make warping look so easy. Beautiful colors and technique.

I can’t wait to try my first warp! Wonderful technique – I’ll review this all again as I try my first practice warp. I can see that it will be good to do a number of “practice” runs before starting to warp an actual project. Thanks so much!

This one video is worth the money for the entire year.

Great episode… it’s not the first time I’ve watched it, nor will it be the last.

I’ve been making the same mistakes warping for many years which threatened to take the joy out of my weaving. It is so clear to me, now. Makes me wonder why I didn’t analyse what was happening! Thank you, Jane and Charlotte for helping me find the joy again!

All things I had read or heard about but didn’t know either what people were talking about OR how to execute. THANK YOU! Winding Warp made much easier and transferring to loom much easier ( I actually took notes 🙂 Now on to Episode 2.

This really shows how I can put tension on my warp right from the warping board! Thanks for that. Look forward to seeing you dress the loom.

Thank you! I learned so much today. I have a table top mill but did not know how to use it until today. I am going to pull it out and assemble and try it tomorrow. Love all of your clear video on chaining and insight concerning tension and multiple treads. Have shoeboxes. Cannot wait to try your technique.

Oh, my, what a fun video to watch! I don’t even have my loom yet (but I will tomorrow!), nor do I have a warping board yet — weaving shop, here I come — but now I cannot wait to use it! It always looked so confusing to me before. Now I have confidence and it actually looks like fun! On to the next video. 🙂

So glad I signed up! I have a Schacht horizontal warping mill. Anything different I need to do versus working with a standing one?

Hi – I recently purchased an Ashford table-top warping mill and am really disappointed as there are several places where the warp threads can bunch – I am planning to sell this and purchase a Glimakra warping mill. I have the space for a floor model, but don’t plan to wind more than 6 yards at a time. I want something sturdy and one that will give me the most consistent warp. The table top is considerably less, but I don’t want to skimp on quality to save money – Any thoughts?

I have a table model and have wound 10 yard warps on it, no problem.

This warp is gorgeous! And I’m really wishing I never let my floor mill go…though I had no place to store it I really loved using it 🙂 Anyway …Jane mentioned that there was a certain pattern – used – I don’t recall the exact wording, but is there a pdf for that? I didn’t see it yet though I’m still fumbling around the site still. Thanks

I watched the warping videos several times before attempting to wind a warp on a table top warping mill–I’ve only warped onto sectional beams with a tension box before now. Wow! It was fun, had a little trouble with keeping an even tension on the cotton when I first started but remembered Jane speeding up her warping after showing us the details more slowly. Success! I now have the loom dressed and the warp tied on, ready to weave. Thanks so much for all the help.

I just wound a warp with 372 threads of 8/2 cotton on my warping mill. I am planning for my warp to be 37″ on the loom and just realized that I should have wound it in 2 sections d/t the width- any suggestions?

What is your sett, Joan? If your sett is 18 epi – you would need 666 ends to get 37” in your reed. 372 divided by 18 epi means that your warp will be 20.6” in your reed. What are you planning to weave?

These videos are amazing and so incredibly helpful. I love being able to watch them over and over. I was given a tabletop mill and I am wondering, is it just me or does anyone else have trouble with their guide string shifting as you warp?

I recently learned that you can mark your warping mill to indicate the various yardages and then you do not need a guide string. I’ve tried it (using masking tape) and it is so much easier especially when you take the warp off of the mill.

Is there a limit to how wide a warp you can (or should!) make on a table top mill? I run out of room below the guide string at the first bottom corner before I’ve wound half my 200 end warp! Scrunching it up only goes so far. I was hoping a mill would allow me to wind any warp in one chain but that’s not really the case is it?

My table top warping mill is a small one. I just wind two warps if there is no room on it for the full width of the warp. However, I do really squish it together!

When is it best to use a warping mill versus a warping board? The mill looks so much more comfortable for my complaining shoulders!

Kimberly, when I’m winding warps on my warping board, I always make chains before I need to because I’m afraid I’ll loose it off the pegs like Jane described in the video. I was thinking the same thing—how nice to just keep going! Do you only use your warping mill or are there still times when you use a warping board?

Virginia, I just got my warping mill so I’m using it exclusively right now (to get better at it!) but I do see the benefit of using the warping board, esp for shorter warps. My warps on the board are still faster (and nicer). I find the warps on the mill get (slightly) longer as I progress – no doubt due to the corner (as explained by Jane in the video). This isn’t a big deal as I cut the threads evenly across the bottom but still …

Kimberly, thanks for your response. I hope to buy a mill someday for longer warps. It sounds like you’re enjoying yours. I’m surprised to hear your board is faster than your mill. I do love the process on the warping board.

What are your thoughts about when to split a warp into two or more chains? I usually see recommendations to never go wider than 15” in the loom, but I don’t recall Jane mentioning it. In fact, I thought she made a reference to making a very wide warp.
-
February 16, 2021 at 8:53 pm #197313
If I’m winding a warp that is wider than my reel can handle, I just divide it in two. I, personally, have never heard of a 15” limit.
