        Hi Kids

Hope you enjoyed this episode.  Working with mohair is easier than you might think 🙂

I want to make one!!! But my Spring loom is only 36″ wide 🙁

I imagine double weaving mohair is actually impossible.

There are many little tips in here that I think would make handling any hairy or sticky yarns much easier.

          Yay Jane!

36″ would still make a big lovely wrap 🙂

I do know someone who made a double width mohair blankie on a Spring loom.  She said it wasn’t too bad, but I haven’t tried it myself.

I would try it with a scarf first just to see how your sheds worked….again starting with a small project, or try a wee sample.    That counter-marche shed on the Spring loom opens remarkably well.

I just looked the first part of the episode with wide big eyes, so fanatstic to see how this fuzzy warp do what Jane say  ((-:

And I had one question can I make a skeleton tie up on a spring loom cause it is a parallel counternarche loom

must I left out the  second harness which shoul gp up?

              Thanks for helping me thinking

                  Hi Gabrielle,

Glad you liked the episode.  Yes you can do a skeleton tie-up on a Spring Loom.  Here is a link to a little article from my HelpLine

                  https://janestaffordtextiles.com/faq/skeleton-tie-ups-on-a-countermarche-loom/

                  Hope this helps.

                  Cheers,

Hi from chilly Fort St. John.

My daughter gave me a few skeins of silk mohair blend 40%silk, 60% mohair, each ball is 52 grams, not sure how much yardage.  I have been looking at it for well over a year wondering how to handle all the fluff so thank you.  Now I doubt these two small balls would make a scarf but what could I use for a warp so I can make something with this beautiful present?  One is purple, the other is orange.  My brain is saying oh those won’t go together, my 12 year old granddaughter who is a spinner/weaver says Oh Grandma I think it will look AMAZING!  Back to the drawing board.

I also have some less fuzzy 49% Linen/35% Kid Mohair 16% nylon that i bought from a clearing sale, might have to try something with that too.

Happy New Year Jane, I really enjoy your guild and look forward to the New Year with you. 🙂  I did buy myself a Christmas gift, Handy dandy Irwin Quck grips!

                          Hi SHeryl,

How about a fine merino or Zephyr for warp opened up so it can all full beautifully.  Purple and Orange will be beautiful, trust your granddaughter 🙂

If you have any of those yarns trying wrapping your ruler…but remember it has to be open so it can stay soft after the fulling.

                          Happy New Year.

I’m intrigued! I will definitely try a scarf in mohair. You make it look so easy, as usual. I think there’s a small mistake in the PDF though. The scarf warp length should be 2.5 yards long, not 25 yards long. 🙂

What a fantastic episode!!  Mohair is beautiful but I had no idea how to tame it.  Thank you Jane!

For making shetland /mohair blanket, there is no set for plain weave, only for twill. Is it better to do it in twill?

Regarding width – Have you tried making large blanket by seaming two panels?  I think fulling and brushing should hide the seam. Please, advise. Thanks.

                                  Hi Inga,

I would sett it at 8 for pw…..it will be beautiful and more like a throw…the shetland/mohair  at 12 in twill really has the feel of a blankie proper 🙂 and shetland/mohair at 10 is somewhere in between.  They are all beautiful, just different.

I have never tried to piece a mohair blankie….I have done overshot and  twill panels  with success.   Make the join a zinger on purpose.  I think I would full both panels first and then purposely make the join a design element, maybe in a contrasting colour.

BUT, having said all of that, I would make a little sample first…..I always try things in the miniature before I throw all kinds of energy into a big thing.  Saves so much energy.

Thank you Jane. I guess I can put on that 25 yards scarf 🙂 and start sampling. Make my Fanny happy.

Another question – is the set for mohair boucle (the same yardage pp) the same?  Any advise on mixing brushed and boucle? The more I rummage through my stash, the more questions I have. I don’t mind sampling but it is good to have some starting point with those fuzzy and curly delights.

I watched Laura Fry’s video, and she does a mohair boucle scarf at 6 wpi, and it is quite open weave, but then it loses some 25% in width after fulling.  I don’t mind scarf, but for blanket it would be upsetting. Isn’t it better to do a tighter weave?  No experience here, just theorizing.

                                          Hi Inga,

THose 25 yard scarves come in really handy.  If you ever need to fly through the trees, just unwrap that scarf and presto …your Tarzan or Jane!  Be Jane….it’s more fun 🙂

I do combine boucle and brushed mohair all the time.  I love a brushed mohair warp with the boucle in the weft.  I still sett it all the same 6 EPI with 6-7 PPI.

Next episode we full those pieces and a bunch of other fabric and you will see why we need to weave them open, so they can full evenly and still be soft and drapey and completely stable.  I can honestly say that I never lose more than 10-12%. Ever.  You certainly don’t need to loose 25%.  We brush them while they are damp and you get a great deal of your width back at that time.  We never brush when they are dry.

Hope this helps…..go bust that stash 🙂

Great! That is reassuring. I really want the lightness of a blankie.  Always dreamed of having one of Irish mohair blankets. Used to go to Irish store in Toronto and just admired them – o, so yummy and so pricey!  Store closed many years ago. This summer I was in Dublin airport for a few hours, and almost bought one.  Realized that I can weave one now. So, I was waiting for your episode on mohair.  I think I’ll start with a shawl. Fanny already has a warp to tie on (abandoned project) and is permanently tied for two feet stomping.  Now, the only decision is what to combine with 800 meters of hot fuchsia mohair.

Thanks so much for all your help Jane.  You are a fantastic teacher.

Question though – I’m trying to order the mohair sample card on the website and it wants to charge me $17 or $20 for shipping to 99006, USA.  This can’t be right, can it?  Please advise!  🙂

Great episode.  I am starting small as you suggested with the scarf.  Hurdle will be to see how my nose tolerates all the mohair fuzz.  🙂  However I will persevere even if I have to wear a mask for warping steps.

Just to start with a huge thank you for this incredible guild. I am a “returning after a 30 year break”  weaver and I have learned so much from all the episodes! Episode 9 is so intriguing and I am looking forward to working with mohair.  I am somewhat limited when it comes to blankets in that my leclerc loom is only 36” wide. That said I just finished a harrisville shetland blanket woven double width which was a great leap for me but it worked out very nicely. Obviously a mohair warp for double width would be a total disaster but do you think a shetland warp and mohair weft woven double width would be worth attempting?  Again thanks for the excellent instruction!

A 36″ big roomy shawl is pretty darned nice though too 🙂

While I am sad that I won’t have the chance to have ‘face time’ with you, each time I pull up a video, I feel like I am right in the room with you. Your down to earth and very focused teaching style is what I think makes learning from you so valuable. I never fail to get the answer I was looking for, and as a fairly new weaver after 35 or so year as a quilter and now art quilt designer, I know that “original” is still in my genes… so I will be playing around with my own designs as I grow as a weaver – and with you as a guide for all of the most important skills and techniques… this will be a great and fun-filled journey!

Really looking forward to 2018 and all of the design fun . AND our Kingston Handloom Weavers and Spinners Guild has just purchased our first two NEW looms (we have had as many as 13 ‘vintage’ mainly Leclerc in studio) and we are excited to welcome DAVID and WOLF PUP after our Pres and Past Pres studied with YOU this year! Loving having the chance to try all of the great projects you suggest on both! So many thanks for all you do for each of us!

Fantastic! I don’t know when I will be able to get round to working with mohair. Too many ideas, not enough time in the day!

It took me back to my rigid heddle days. I tried to weave a mohair scarf but I wove it with far too close a sett and that resulted in a very hard and stiff fabric with no drape whatsoever!! I realised what I had done but unravelling mohair is not a task I relish.

I always wondered how such a yarn/fibre would work on my David 2 and now, having watched your videos, I won’t be scared to get on with it. My heart sank when you said it would have to be warped front to back but your explanation is so good and I can see how this yarn wouldn’t work with lease sticks. As previous posters have said, the David is 36″ wide so, after first trying a scarf, I will think about how I will weave a blanket. For me the best way would be to weave two lengths at 22,5″ or so wide and sew them together. I think the join would show minimally once the blanket has been fulled and brushed.

I have posted before enquiring about subtitles and, from your reply, I can see why this would be prohibitively expensive. However, you rarely face away from the camera now and I am finding I miss very little, if anything at all.

I am looking forward to 2018’s topics.

                                                        Happy New year to Everyone!

                                                          Hi, Me again!!

I am looking to buy a new reed so that I can weave the mohair blanket. All I can get here is in metric and the smallest work out at approximately 5dpi and 7.5dpi. I am thinking that 7.5 will make the fabric too close but would 5dpi be too open?

Where are you?    I would probably get the 5 as it is closest.  You will have to weave it at 7 PPI.

Total disaster trying to weave a scarf!  I have a big basket of mohair from over the years, but warped with Pingouin 70/30.

solid fuzz in the riddle and the heddles….I cleared and advanced by the inch.

when the bobbin became a solid mass,  is when I cut the whole thing off.

i still have a big basket of mohair!

                                                                  Hi Fran,

Did you use a 6 dent reed like I do in the video?  Did you use a skeletal tie-up and the throw/beat/change (1 at a time) your treadles/beater back /. sequence that I use in the video?

My heddles have fuzz all over them too but I don’t worry about it.  I do not know the yarn you use.

                                                                  The yarn that I have been using since in 1982 is 78% Mohair/ 13 % Wool/ 9 % Nylon core.

The bobbins have to be wound the way I demonstrate…they have to be tight and you have to stay away from the edges and you have to hold all the fuzz down.

It is the pickiest weaving I can think of without the techniques I describe above.  Take one part out and it is very frustrating but if you use all the above you will marvel at how easy it can be.

Hope this helps and hopefully you’ll try again.

I will need to buy a new raddle to do the mohair blanket.  However, I was going through my stash and I have an alarming black hole of Kidsilk Haze.  I also have a cone of 100% mohair that is 3/21 NM, and I have about 900 grams of that.  I’ve not done the math yet to compare, but i know that both are much finer than the mohair you use here.  I’m wondering if I did double strands if it would work??  I don’t really want a lighter blanket which is what I would get if I don’t double strand it.

I would really like to do magenta, orange and either purple or red so will need to order separate amounts anyway.  I just pulled a 22 yard warp off my loom and am rather peeved that I don’t have a warp to put on tomorrow!  I hate naked looms!  Thanks for the videos, I look forward to them every month!!

I’m pretty sure you meant to say reed for your loom, not a new raddle 🙂  But I want to make sure you don’t intend to put it through a raddle ….just checking!

I have doubled up kid mohair many times.  If you don’t you have to increase your epi’s and that was a headache.  This 6 epi seems to be the sweet spot for sticky mohair.

                                                                      Hope this helps,

But right now I do not have a loom big enough and will buy one this spring. I would love to get the larger Spring but would that be too small for a blanket? Do you make blankets on your Spring?

I was delighted by how Jane’s warping instructions allowed things to go so smoothly.  I chose to warp up a Louet Kombo 16 but thought I might regret the small size. However, the shed was brilliant so very little fluff catching and it was finished with a wash and brush up in a couple of days.  Was really pleased with it.  Thanks Jane. I might give the blanket a try when finances have recovered from Christmas but by the look of things I might be too involved in the new year plans to be able to look backwards!

One question: can you give me an idea of how wide we might be going with the samples this year so I can, hopefully, choose a suitable loom at our workshop.  I have a 27″ ‘Jane’ at home.

If you open it all the way up to the samples Jane was showing us at 12 epi, that would be 23 1/3 inches wide in your reed.  Does this help?  I don’t know yet, how many ends there are in the different samples but I doubt they will vary that much.

I noted in the video that the heddles are the open eye type, will mohair go through the steel slit heddles or the texsolv heddles without shredding toooo much of the fluff?

                                                                                            Hi!

I did the mohair blankie on my Louet Hollandia loom (blanket was 49″ in the reed) with Texsolv heddles, following Jane’s instructions every step of the way.  I had absolutely zero trouble anywhere in the entire process.

I did have a bit of fuzz buildup among the heddles while winding on the warp, so I stopped and pulled that out periodically. No trouble while weaving at all.  At the end, there was a bit of fuzz in the heddles, but not anywhere near what I expected to have.

                                                                                            I hope that helps,

I was worried about the colors my grand daughter selected for her birthday blatnket, which were much too bright for my personal liking.  Turquoise, fuchsia and purple. Side the side, they looked like My Little Pony and colors a 7 year old would pick. I just knew it was going to be a miserable weave because I hated the colors. To my surprise, it was a delightful challenge. I used bought a 6 dent reed for it which really added to the expense but I think I’ll be making more in the future so it won’t be a waste.

We have a 32 shaft LeClerc Weavebird loom which is the only loom I have that is 45”. We programmed the software to only lift specific shafts. It wasn’t exactly in the order Jane recommended but it worked out very well. I had many clean sheds.

I have never had the guts to try it 🙂

But…that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.  There are so many things I haven’t tried.

Why don’t you give it a whirl on a narrow warp say 10” wide.  You’ll know after that and if you do try, please let us know how it went 🙂

                                                                                                                                            Sorry I can’t be help.

                                                                                                                                            Cheers,

Made 4 scarves and was able to keep it under control with your ideas on warping and bobbin winding.   Very fun. Could I use an 8 dent reed and set for 6? Will the yarn (JST mohair) get too abraded? So eager to weave but forgot I don’t have a 6 dent reed.

Are you weaving a scarf? Do you have a 5 dent reed?
