Hi all. I’m getting ready to make hand towels using an 8 shaft M’s & O’s pattern from the Stricker book. (Page 97). I’m using Bockens 22/2 cottolin. Any suggestions regarding the sett?

I know Jane suggests 18 -20 sett for plain weave, but M’s & O’s are more than plain weave. Appreciate any suggestions.

          Hi Janis,

Did you end up finding out more on M & O’s and sett?  I’ve never woven M & Os but have looked online a bit, and from what I can gather,  since there’s actually quite a bit of plain weave, if you had a closer sett, would it make the plain weave section tighter?  I looked up your pattern, it’s quite lovely by the way!   I like to weave towels on the more open setts, for example, plain weave I’ll use 18 epi for 2/8 cotton and 22 epi for a lot of twills.  Let us know what you’ve come up with as I’m quite interested now after looking up this pattern 🙂

Forgot to mention…. that I would try it at 20 epi  😉

Hi. Sorry for the delay in responding but ‘life’ got in the way. I’m in the process of winding the warp.  After thinking about the sett for a while, I came to the same conclusion as you to go with 20epi. I’ve done cottolin in a plain weave @ 20epi in the past (with a 10 dent reed) and got a nice, drapey (sp?) result.  A little firmer than 18epi for PW, but hopefully good with the M&O structure.

I’ll keep you posted on how it all goes. And if I figure out how to add an image, I’ll do so.

BTW, on page 97, I’m doing pattern 346.
