8 shaft twill tie-ups

I’ve tried finding a tie-up for an 8 shaft twill, I’ve tried figuring out my own (disaster) and need help.  If I’d had any sense I’d have just tied up a 4 shaft twill, but rethreading the heddles and re-sleying is not an option I’m prepared to take at this stage.  Help!

8 shaft twill tie-ups are easy.  There are many of them.  Before we do 8 I think we should go back and look at 4 shaft twills.  Remember 1 2, 2 3, 3 4, 1 4.  In the tie-up box 1 and 2 move up and over to become 2 and 3 then 2 and 3 move up and over to become 3 and 4, then 3 and 4 move up and over to become 4 and 1 and at that point you have a wrap around.  The 4 couldn’t jump out of the tie-up box so it had to wrap around and become 1.  Hope you are still with me.  What you just created was a 2/2 twill.  There was always 2 shafts up and 2 down on every treadle.  You can also have 1/3 twills and 3/1 twills.

The same thing happens with 8 shaft twills except you have a lot more options.  A 4/4 twill will look like this 1, 2, 3, 4 which then becomes 2, 3, 4, 5 which then becomes 3, 4, 5, 6 which then becomes 4, 5, 6, 7 which then becomes 5, 6, 7, 8 which then becomes 6, 7, 8,1  which then becomes 7, 8, 1, 2 which then becomes 8, 1, 2, 3 which then becomes the end because we have wrapped around one complete time and you would be back at 1, 2, 3, 4.  And you would have 4 end floats in that 4/4 twill. With 8 shafts you could have a 1/7 twill line, 2/6, 3/5, 4/4 which we just did above.  You can have multiple lines and you can have twill blocks. Now I have a question for you.  What are you weaving and do you want long floats?

I’m weaving a tartan blanket.  And, no, I don’t want long floats.  A 2/2 twill would suit me fine, thanks!

Okay toots …………………

Treadle #1                              1, 2, 5, 6

Treadle #2                              2, 3, 6, 7

Treadle #3                              3, 4, 7, 8

Treadle #4                              1, 4, 5, 8

You just need 4 treadles and you will be weaving a 2/2 twill on 8 shafts.  Try it, you’ll like it.
